Scheuermann places sixth at state wrestling tournament

A quartet of Greene County wrestlers competed at Wells Fargo Arena in the state tournament last week with Gavin Scheuermann placing sixth in the 2A-157 weight class. 

Scheuermann was 30-6 his senior season, losing in the fifth place match by a fall with 35 seconds left in the match. Scheuermann’s first loss of the tournament came in the semifinal round when he lost to 54-0 Tucker Stangel from Osage, who went on to take first place. 

Junior Gavyn Winters wrestled at 120, not finding a place at the state tournament but finishing his season with a 24-10 record. He fell in his first round to Mack Morgan of Eagle Grove, who also did not place. After receiving a first round of consolation bye, he fell in the second round to Jake Haugse of Mount Vernon.

Brent Dennhardt, junior, competing in the 165 weight class, was unable to find a place after losing by decision in the second championship round to Logan Powers of Roland-Story, who placed fifth, and again in the fourth consolation round to Zayvion Ellington of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, who placed third. Dennhardt had a 41-5 season.

Degan Miller took on the state meet as a freshman in the 175 weight class, falling in his first round to Brock Voyna of Crestwood, Cresco, who went on to take fifth. Miller received a first round consolation bye and won his second round by a 3-2 decision over Kason Dopler of Columbus/WMU. Miller fell by a 9-1 major decision to Dru Diaz from Davenport Assumption, Assumption, who placecd seventh overall. Miller’s season record was 32-17. 

In the Class 2A team standings, Osage earned the state championship with 128.5 points. Greene County finished 50th out of 77 places with 16 team points. 

120 – Gavyn Winters lost by fall to Mack Morgan 1:58; received a bye; lost by fall to Jake Haugse 5:30.

157 – Gavin Scheuermann received a bye; won by major decision over Brody Hanson 15-2; won by decision over Taevyn Zinnel 6-2; lost by fall to Tucker Stangel 3:56; lost by decision to Taylor Mahler 9-6; lost by fall to Karson Kolbet 5:25. 

165 – Brent Dennhardt received a bye; lost by decision to Logan Powers 11-9; won by major decision over Tyler Pisney 16-2; won by major decision over Chase Ragaller 14-2; lost by decision to Zayvion Ellington 3-2. 

175 – Degan Miller lost by fall to Brock Voyna 1:25; received a bye; won by decision over Kason Dopler 3-2; lost by major decision to Dru Diaz 9-1.
